Wilko Johnson Biography

Wilko Johnson was an English guitarist, singer, composer, and sometimes actor. He was born John Peter Wilkinson on the 12th of July 1947 and passed away on the 21st of November 2022. During the 1970s, he was a member of Dr. Feelgood, a band that played pub rock as well as rhythm & blues. Johnson was well-known for his unique approach to playing the guitar, which he did by eschewing the use of a pick in favor of the more traditional fingerstyle technique. This gave him the ability to play rhythm guitar as well as riffs or solos at the same time, which resulted in a guitar sound that was quite percussive.

Both Johnson and Dr. Feelgood were pivotal figures in the development of the punk scene in England. “Wilko may not be as famous as some other guitarists, but he’s right up there,” was something that Paul Weller had remarked about Wilko Johnson. In addition, there are a great number of people who are of the same opinion. I am able to pick up Wilko in a variety of settings. It’s quite the inheritance.

Cause Of Death

In November of 2012, Johnson had to call off a performance because he was sent to the hospital for treatment of an illness that was not revealed. [32] He received the news that he had advanced pancreatic cancer in January of 2013, but he decided against undergoing any chemotherapy treatment.

On the 25th of January, 2013, he participated in an interview that was shown on the arts program Front Row, which is broadcast on BBC Radio 4. He spoke about his cancer and mentioned that the doctors had given him an estimated nine to ten months left to live. He also discussed his “farewell tour” of the United Kingdom, which is scheduled to take place in March, as well as how his diagnosis had made him feel “vividly alive.”  Following the conclusion of the tour, he made the announcement that he would spend his remaining time working on a farewell album with the lead singer of the Who, Roger Daltrey.  The CD, titled Going Back Home, was first made available for purchase in March of 2014. Later, in October 2014, he shared his thoughts with the entertainment correspondent for BBC News, Colin Paterson, saying, “I believed it was going to be the last thing I ever did.”

On the other hand, Johnson did not have the more typical form of pancreatic cancer known as adenocarcinoma. After further investigation, it was found that he had a pancreatic neuroendocrine tumour (PanNET), a type of the cancer that is less aggressive and more amenable to treatment Johnson had extensive surgery to address his sickness, and the physicians were optimistic about the outcome of his recovery since they believed it would be favorable.  At the Q Awards on October 22, 2014, Johnson accepted the “Icon Award” and announced that he was “cancer-free” after having “removal of his pancreas, spleen, part of his stomach, small and large intestines, and the removal and reconstruction of blood vessels relating to the liver.” Johnson had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2010. According to Johnson, “It was an 11-hour operation…” This tumor weighed 3 kilograms, which is equivalent to the weight of an infant. In any case, they achieved their goal. They healed me completely. Because it is so odd and peculiar, my mind is having a hard time wrapping itself around the idea that it’s actually happening. Currently, I am devoting my time to progressively coming to grips with the concept that my passing is not imminent, and that I am going to continue living. When asked what he would do after the operation, he responded, “I don’t know really.” He also mentioned that he was still resting from the procedure.

Johnson passed away on the 21st of November 2022, at the age of 75, in his house.
Billy Bragg made the following statement in response to the news of Johnson’s passing: “His guitar playing was aggressive and angular, but his presence was something we’d never witnessed before in UK music. He was twitchy, belligerent, and out of control.”

Rotten, Strummer, and Weller gained a great deal of insight from his aggressive demeanor.

The lead vocalist of Franz Ferdinand, Alex Kapranos, is quoted as saying that “His distinctive, wired playing and stage presence captivated and inspired many guitarists,” including Kapranos himself. Bob Harris, a well-known broadcaster, once claimed that Wilko was one of a kind. Incredible amounts of energy and soul radiated from him.
