Jitendra Awhad Biography

Jitendra Satish Awhad is a politician who hails from the state of Maharashtra in India. He served as the Member of the Legislative Assembly of Maharashtra for the Constituency of Mumbra-Kalwa in Thane for a total of three terms. In 2014, he was a member of the Cabinet and served as the Minister of Medical Education and Horticulture. From 2019 until 2022, he was the Minister of Housing and Minority Affairs. In addition, from the year 2020 onward, he held the position of Guardian Minister of Solapur. The Nationalist Congress Party is one of his affiliations.

 

Early Life and Education 

Jitendra Awhad was born to his parents, Shri Satish Awhad and Smt. Lilavati Awhad. He graduated from St. John the Baptist High School, which is located in Thane. In 1981, he became a student at B.N. Bandodkar College with the intention of graduating in the field of science. During his time at the university, he was elected to serve as the secretary of the Gymkhana. After graduation, he went on to serve in a similar capacity for the All-India Students’ Organization, a group that is not affiliated with any political party. Early on in his career, Awhad took a stand for several social problems, beginning his first campaign in 1982 at Mumbai University to protest the increasing cost of tuition. Following the completion of his studies in marine engineering in 1984–1985, he attended Mumbai University to pursue a postgraduate degree in human management. Awhad also has a Doctor of Philosophy degree, which he earned from Mumbai University. The title of his dissertation was “The History of Socio-Religious Movement in Maharashtra, a Sub-Alternate View.”

During his time as a student at the university, Awhad looked up to Sharad Pawar as a role model and regarded him to be his mentor. He became a member of the students’ wing of the Indian National Congress, where he served as President of the Akhil Bhartiya Vanjara Youth Association while also holding the offices of Chief Secretary and General Secretary in the Maharashtra branch of the Indian National Congress. After serving as the Chief Secretary of the Maharashtra Pradesh National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) from 1988 to 1991, he was subsequently promoted to the position of General Secretary of the NSUI throughout the entirety of India. In addition to his involvement in politics, he held the position of Assistant Labour Officer at Kores India Limited in Thane from the years 1988 till 1995. Awhad was given the role of President of the Maharashtra Pradesh Youth Congress in the year 1996.

Formation of Nationalist Congress Party 

In 1999, after the 12th Lok Sabha was dissolved and elections were called for the 13th Lok Sabha, Sharad Pawar, P. A. Sangma, and Tariq Anwar demanded that the party needed to propose someone native-born as the prime ministerial candidate rather than the Italian-born Sonia Gandhi, who had entered party politics and replaced Sitaram Kesri as Congress president. This was in response to the fact that Sonia Gandhi had taken over as Congress president after Sitaram As a direct result of this, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) expelled the three individuals from the party for a period of six years.

Pawar and Sangma established the Nationalist Congress Party in June of 1999 in response to the situation. Despite the fact that they had fallen out, the new party joined forces with the Congress party to establish a coalition government in Maharashtra after the election for the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in 1999. This was done in order to prevent the Shiv Sena and BJP combination from regaining power.

 

In Politics 

In the year 1999, not long after the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) was established, Awhad won the election to become the first National President of the Youth NCP. From this platform, he entered mainstream politics and was eventually elected to the position of MLC in the year 2002. In March of 2008, he won re-election to his position as an MLC for a period of five years. In 2009, he ran for office for the very first time and won with a significant margin from the Mumbra-Kalwa constituency.

In May of 2014, he was appointed to his current position in the government under Prithviraj Chavan as the Minister of Medical Education, Horticulture, and Employment Guarantee. Dr. Jitendra Awhad, who was serving as the Minister of Horticulture for the state of Maharashtra at the time, rose to prominence after he suggested that Amitabh Bachchan take on the role of brand ambassador for the state’s horticulture industry. This role would encourage farmers, promote their produce, and ensure quality for consumers. Amitabh Bachchan was given the role of horticulture brand ambassador for the state of Maharashtra in July of 2014.

Coffee with Students is a program that was initiated by Dr. Jitendra Awhad with the goal of connecting medical students from across the state and helping them find solutions to their problems. In just the first month, cities such as Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Aurangabad, Kolhapur, Nagpur, Dhule, and Solapur have been covered, and effective measures to improve the situations for students and staff have been taken.

In the year 2019, he was appointed to the position of Minister of Housing within the Thackeray ministry. Awhad was given the position of Minister of Minority Development and Aukaf in March 2022, shortly after Nawab Malik stepped down from his position in the cabinet.

Personal Life and Activities 

Awhad is a member of the Vanjari caste and he is a Hindu. He is married to Ruta Samant, the daughter of Dutta Samant, a prominent trade union leader. Dutta Samant is well-known for leading two hundred to three hundred textile mill workers in the city of Bombay on a year-long strike in 1982, which resulted in the shutdown of the majority of the textile mills in the city. Awhad is married to Rut Natasha Awhad is their only child and her name is.

Through his non-profit organization, Sangharsh, he is recognized with popularizing and arranging the holiday of Krishna Janmashtami, also known as Dahi Handi. Every year, the celebration attracts tens of thousands of people, particularly large groups of young people from Thane, Mumbai, and Navi Mumbai who come to compete in the festival by building human pyramids and competing for enormous prizes. In addition to that, he was successful in inviting Human Pyramid organizations from Spain to participate in this festival, and he set world records for the highest pyramids consisting of 9 tiers.
