Nigerian banker Godwin Emefiele now serves as the Central Bank of Nigeria’s governor, a position he has held since 2014. He was born in Lagos State, Nigeria, on August 4, 1961.

Godwin Emefiele Education
Emefiele completed his secondary school at the elite University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) after attending the prestigious Ansar Udin Primary School and Maryland Comprehensive Secondary, both in Lagos.
He graduated with a degree in banking and finance. He also graduated from executive education programs at Stanford, Harvard, and Wharton schools of business.
Godwin Emefiele Career
Early in his career, Emefiele taught in finance and insurance at the Universities of Nigeria in Nsukka and Port Harcourt. He also did a little bit of work for Vodafone.
Emefiele had more than 18 years of experience in the banking sector prior to joining the Central Bank. He worked for Zenith Bank Plc and held the positions of group managing director and CEO. In 2001, Emefiele worked at Zenith Bank Plc as the deputy managing director.
He served as executive director in corporate banking, treasury, financial control, and strategic planning. He was a founding member of Zenith Bank Plc’s management team.
Emefiele was a director at Zenith Bank Plc and Zenith Bank (Gambia) Limited. As a director, Emefiele is in charge of ACCION Microfinance Bank Limited.
Emefiele was selected as governor of the Nigerian Central Bank in 2014. During his first term, he oversaw an interventionist currency strategy that involved flooding the foreign exchange market with billions of dollars to strengthen the Nigerian Naira at the president’s command.
He also instituted a system of different exchange rates to mask Naira pressure and stop a series of devaluations. Emefiele was given a second five-year term in 2019 by the Nigerian Senate.

Godwin Emefiele Controversy
According to reports, Emefiele tried to run for president of the federal republic of Nigeria in May 2022. What started as a rumor when Emefiele’s APC presidential candidacy form was purchased by a group of supposed rice farmers, who then spread the rumor when campaign posters for the bank governor flooded Abuja, the nation’s capital.
Emefiele, however, later said via his verified Twitter account that he had no plans to run for government. In an unexpected turn of events, Emefiele complained to the Federal High Court in Abuja, requesting that the court issue an injunction instructing the electoral commission and the attorney general’s office not to obstruct his bid for the presidency. The plea was denied by the court.
