Currently serving in the role of Quarter Master General at GHQ is Lieutenant General Asim Munir. He is rumored to have a tight relationship with General Bajwa. At the same time that Bajwa was serving as commander of the X Corps, he was a commander in the Force Command Northern Areas (FCNA) in his capacity as a Brigadier. The X Corps is responsible for the overall leadership of the FCNA.
The current crop of two-star generals all came from the same cohort at the Pakistan Military Academy in Abbottabad. Lieutenant General Munir is the senior most of the present crop of two-star generals. He is a graduate of the Officers Training School in Mangla.
Former military authorities claim that Munir is the son of a schoolteacher and that he grew up in the city of Rawalpindi, which is a garrison city. An official informed Reuters that he was given the honorable title of “top of his year” at the military academy, which entitled him to win the famous “sword of honor” award for officers.
The Officers Training School in Mangla was Asim Munir’s alma mater, and he graduated from the 17th course there. It was the 23rd Battalion of the Frontier Force Regiment that commissioned him as an officer. It was in 1986 when he first joined the military. In September of 2018, he was awarded the rank of Lieutenant General, and shortly after that, he was appointed to the position of Director General of the ISI. Earlier in his career, he held the position of Director General of Military Intelligence. In March 2018, he was given the Hilal-i-Imtiaz award for his achievements. Earlier in his career, he had held the position of commander of the Troops that were stationed in the Northern Areas of Pakistan. Lt. Gen. Faiz Hameed took over as the new Director General of the ISI in June 2019, succeeding Munir in that role. After being promoted and reassigned, Munir now serves as the Corps Commander of the XXX Corps in Gujranwala.
